What’s new
Release notes for PencilCAD, newest first.
Scratch paper, now with 2D CAD
Version 2.0 gives the app a new name and a second toolbar. The sketching you know is all still there, and the CAD tools are one switch away in Settings → Tools.
Two toolbars
- Sketch has the pens, highlighter, eraser, lasso, ruler and drag-to-fill.
- CAD adds Select, Line, Measure, Shape, Modify, Constrain, Text and Layers.
CAD tools
- Lines, boxes, circles, ellipses, arcs and curves that stay editable. Drag a corner and joined lines follow.
- Snaps to ends, midpoints, centres, intersections, quadrants and curves, plus tangent, perpendicular, parallel and polar.
- Modify trims, extends, fillets, chamfers and offsets. Select moves, copies, rotates, mirrors, scales and arrays.
- Up to 10 layers a page, each one shown, hidden or locked.
- Text labels.
Dimensions that know their length
- Measure labels each dimension with its length, in mm, cm, m, inches or feet and inches.
- Radius and diameter dimensions, and a page scale that relabels every dimension at once.
- Tap a label to type a length and the line resizes to it.
Pencil-first constraints
- Write a number by a line, circle or angle and it becomes a driving dimension.
- Draw tick, arrow and corner marks for equal, parallel and square.
- Hold a scribble still to turn it into clean, constrained lines.
- Finish adds whatever a sketch is missing. Fully defined sketches turn green.
- When constraints clash, a card names the clash and offers a fix.
Import and export
- Trace a photo, a scan or a PDF page on a locked underlay, and set its scale with two taps.
- Open DXF and SVG drawings as editable shapes.
- Export PDF to scale on Letter or A4, SVG in mm or inches, and DXF with layers and colours.
Everywhere else
- iCloud sync, and a PencilCAD viewer for iPhone.
- Pages twice the size of the screen, with zoom from the whole page to 8×.
- Pencil hover previews, squeeze and barrel roll on Apple Pencil Pro, and keyboard shortcuts.
- A new icon.
